The New Sound of Ahaddaf

Op maandag 22 juni speelt componist/muzikant Mohamed Ahaddaf in de grote zaal van Paradiso voor een klein publiek. Het concert wordt vastgelegd op video en op maandag 29 juni uitgezonden via de kanalen van Marmoucha.

The New Sound of Ahaddaf
Mohamed Ahaddaf combineert westerse jazz met zijn Andalusische roots en invloeden uit het Midden-Oosten, wat resulteert in een spannend en kleurrijk geluid. Tijdens dit concert laat hij een aantal nieuwe nummers horen.

Mohamed Ahaddaf is een componist en muzikant uit Marokko, die stevig geworteld is in de Andalusische cultuur. Hij studeerde aan het conservatorium van Tetouan en had les van de grootmeester Mohamed Ramat. Hij was solist van het Andalusisch orkest van Mohamed Lardi Temsamani. Mohamed Ahaddaf woont ruim 20 jaar in Nederland en is een gerespecteerd musicus. In aanvulling op zijn Andalusische wortels heeft hij zich ontwikkeld in de jazzmuziek en Arabische muziek. In 2010 richtte hij ‘Ahaddaf Quartet’ op met ud, piano, bas en percussie. Een ongebruikelijke combinatie, waarbij de piano en de ud centraal staan. Deze instrumenten staan aan de basis van verschillende cultureel bepaalde muziekpraktijken. Wat de piano is voor de westerse muziek (iedere muzikant speelt een beetje piano en de piano is in bijna iedere combinatie aanwezig), dat is de ud voor de Arabische muziek. Iedere muzikant speelt een beetje ud, en het is de basis van ieder orkest. Het combineren van deze twee instrumenten vraagt extra aandacht, niet in de laatste plaats door de vaste, getemperde stemming van de piano en de vrije, met kwartnoten doorspekte, stemmingen van de ud.

Dit concert wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met Stichting Kunst en Dialoog, OBA en Marmoucha, waar Mohamed Ahaddaf artistiek coördinator is van de Midden-Oosterse en Noord-Afrikaanse muziek van het Marmoucha Collective. Hij was tevens nauw betrokken bij de oprichting.

Mohamed Ahaddaf combines Western jazz with his Andalusian roots and Middle Eastern influences, used in an exciting and colorful sound. During this concert he will play a number of new songs.

Mohamed Ahaddaf is a composer and musician from Morocco, deeply rooted in Andalusian culture. He studied at the Tetouan Conservatory and was taught by the grandmaster Mohamed Ramat. He was a soloist of the Andalusian orchestra of Mohamed Lardi Temsamani. Mohamed Ahaddaf has lived in the Netherlands for over 20 years and is a respected musician. In addition to his Andalusian roots, he has developed in jazz and Arabic music. In 2010, he founded ‘Ahaddaf Quartet’ with ud, piano, bass and percussion. An unusual combination, where the piano and the ud are central. These instruments are based on various culturally determined music practices. The ud for Arabic music, is what the piano is for Western music (every musician plays a little piano and the piano is present in almost every combination). Every musician plays a little ud, and it is the basis of every orchestra. Combining these two instruments requires extra attention, not least because of the upright, tempered mood of the piano and the free, quarter-note-tuned tunings of the ud.

This concert is organized in collaboration with the Art and Dialogue Foundation, OBA and Marmoucha, where Mohamed Ahaddaf is the artistic coordinator of the Middle Eastern and North African music of the Marmoucha Collective. He was also closely involved in the establishment.
