Xavi Torres

Spaanse pianovirtuoos Xavi Torres (1991) is een van de meest opvallende jonge musici van de Europese scene. Zijn muziek is zeer fantasierijk en melodieus, terwijl hij ritmisch zeer sterk en energiek is en zijn mediterrane wortels combineert met de ervaring in Amsterdam, klassieke muziek en Zuid-Amerikaanse ritmes. De composities en het samenspel zijn constant in evolutie en verkenning, wat elke uitvoering fris houdt en het publiek meeneemt door verschillende emoties en staten gedurende de concerten. Na uitgebreid klassieke en jazz gestudeerd te hebben, heeft hij verschillende internationale prijzen gewonnen (zoals de Dutch Jazz Competition, Beste solist bij de Getxo-wedstrijd of de Keep an Eye International Jazz Award), en is hij de tweede Spanjaard die ooit in de finale van de prestigieuze Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition in december 2018 heeft gestaan, na Jorge Rossy in 1992. Hij heeft 6 albums uitgebracht als leider, die grote waardering kregen van critici en publiek over heel Europa. Zijn laatste album is “Quarantaine Songs”: Tijdens de eerste pandemische lockdown schreef Torres elke dag een stuk gedurende 30 dagen, als oefening om de creatieve energie gaande te houden, en nam een selectie ervan op met twee verschillende all-stars ritmesecties, om meer kleuren te hebben voor elk nummer. Een uit Spanje met Reinier Elizarde “El Negrón” op contrabas en Andreu Pitarch op drums, en een uit Nederland met Clemens van der Feen op contrabas en Jamie Peet op drums. Leer de basis van piano van zijn zus Neus, werd Xavi Torres verliefd op het instrument als jonge jongen. Hij ontwikkelde al snel interesse in jazz, blues en improvisatie, en besloot jazzpiano te gaan studeren in Barcelona. De vrijheid en improvisatie in jazz openden nieuwe werelden voor hem, maar klassieke muziek bleef stevig in zijn hart. In plaats van het een of het ander te kiezen, toen Torres naar Amsterdam ging om zijn studies in jazz verder uit te breiden, besloot hij tegelijkertijd de bachelor in klassieke piano te volgen, waarbij hij zijn twee liefdes combineerde, wat onlangs leidde tot het geprezen Kind of Beethoven-project. Met uitgebreide studies van zowel klassieke als jazzmuziek heeft Xavi Torres een uitzonderlijke kijk op hedendaagse muziek – zoals het vloeiend zijn in twee talen. Zijn muziek komt voort uit een sterke verbinding met de realiteit en haar strijd, maar overstijgt deze en spreekt op zichzelf, alle gemengde gevoelens van het moment uitdrukkend: van verdriet tot hoop tot nostalgie tot dankbaarheid, met sterke aandacht voor details en nuances. “Ik geloof dat muziek, en kunst in het algemeen, een dubbele dimensie heeft. Aan de ene kant is het een product van de wereld om ons heen, aan de andere kant werkt kunst ook als een ontsnappingsweg van deze realiteit. Mijn inspiratie om muziek te maken komt voort uit deze dualiteit. Ik probeer zeer verbonden te zijn met de realiteit en haar strijd, en dan probeer ik muziek te creëren die deze overstijgt en op zichzelf spreekt. Muziek is een van de tools die ons helpen creatief te blijven en positieve dingen te brengen om een soort positieve impact te creëren.” Hij heeft meer dan 45 albums opgenomen met verschillende bands en wereldwijd gespeeld met musici als Miguel Zenon, Seamus Blake, Aynur Dogan, Alex Sipiagin, Dick Oatts, Terell Stafford, Jasper Hoiby, Jesse van Ruller, Nir Felder, Tineke Postma, Jorge Rossy. Hij heeft muziek geschreven voor FUSE, Dudok String Quartet en het Intercontinental Ensemble, onder anderen, en heeft Lluís Vidal’s Piano Concerto in première gebracht.

Spanish pianist virtuoso Xavi Torres (1991) is one of the most outstanding young musicians from the European scene.

His music is extremely imaginative and melodic while being rhythmically very strong and energetic, combining his Mediterranean roots with the Amsterdam experience, classical music and South American rhythms. The compositions and the interplay are in constant evolution and exploration, which keeps every performance fresh, bringing the audience into several emotions and states throughout the concerts.
After having extensively studied Classical and Jazz. He has won several international prizes (such as the Dutch Jazz Competition, Best soloist at the Getxo competition or Keep an Eye International Jazz Award), and he is the second Spanish to ever be in the finals of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition in December 2018, after Jorge Rossy in 1992.

He has released 6 albums as a leader, which had great answers by critics and audience all around Europe. His last album is “Quarantena Songs”: During the first pandemic lockdown, Torres wrote one piece every day for 30 days, as an exercise of keeping the creative energy going, and recorded a selection of them with two different all-stars rhythm sections, in order to have more colors for each song. Learning the basics of piano from his sister Neus, Xavi Torres fell in love with the instrument as a young boy. He soon developed an interest in jazz, blues and improvisation, so he decided he wanted to study jazz piano in Barcelona. The freedom and improvisation in jazz opened new worlds for him, but classical music remained steadily in his heart. Rather than choosing one or the other, when Torres went to Amsterdam to further his studies in jazz, he decided to start the bachelor in classical piano at the same time, combining his two loves, which recently brought to live the acclaimed Kind of Beethoven project.

Having extensively studied both classical and jazz music, Xavi Torres has an exceptional outlook on contemporary music – like being fluent in two languages.
His music comes from being very connected with the reality and its struggles, but it trascends them and speaks on its own, expressing all the mixed feelings of the moment: from sadness to hope to nostalgia to gratitude with strong attention to details and nuances. “I believe music, and art in general, has a double size. On one hand it is a product of the world that surrounds us, on the other hand, art also works as an escape way from this reality. My inspiration to create music comes from this duality. I try to be very connected with the reality and its struggles, and then I try to create music that transcends it and speaks on its own. Music is one of the tools to keep us being creative and bringing positive things to create some kind of positive impact.”
He has recorded more than 45 albums with several bands and played worlwide with musicians like Miguel Zenon, Seamus Blake, Aynur Dogan, Alex Sipiagin, Dick Oatts, Terell Stafford, Jasper Hoiby Jesse van Ruller, Nir Felder, Tineke Postma, Jorge Rossy.
