Granada draagt de sporen van eeuwenlange uitwisseling tussen Andalusië en Noord-Afrika. Ook in de muziek klinkt die geschiedenis nog altijd door. Melodieën, ritmes en muzikale vormen reisden over en weer over de Middellandse Zee en kregen aan beide kanten nieuwe betekenissen. Precies daar, in Granada, komen vier musici samen voor drie bijzondere concertavonden.

Vanuit Nederland reizen Marmoucha Orchestra’s ud-speler Mohamed Ahaddaf en percussionist Emad Ghajjou naar Granada om samen te spelen met de Marokkaans-Spaanse zangeres Habiba Ouakhchachi Chaoufi en de Marokkaanse qanun-speler Youssef Mezghildi. Habiba werd geboren in Casablanca en woont inmiddels in Granada, waar zij zich ook verdiepte in flamenco en de muzikale tradities van Andalusië.

Op het programma staat muziek uit verschillende regio’s en tradities van Marokko, met onder andere Malhoun, Gharnati, soefimuziek en Arabo-Andalusische muziek. De musici blijven dicht bij de melodieën en het karakter van deze muziek en in de arrangementen, improvisaties en het samenspel is de werkwijze van Marmoucha Orchestra goed te horen: iedere musicus brengt zijn eigen achtergrond en muzikale signatuur mee. Met ud, qanun, percussie en de prachtige stem van Habiba ontstaat een levendig samenspel waarin de muzikale geschiedenis van Marokko en Andalusië doorklinkt zonder dat de muziek in het verleden blijft staan.

De concerten vinden plaats op drie karakteristieke locaties in het hart van Granada: Sostiene Pereira op 22 oktober, Hall Gar Anat in Hotel Gar-Anat op 23 oktober en Taberno del Beso op 24 oktober.

Granada bears the traces of centuries of exchange between Andalusia and North Africa. That history can still be heard in its music today. Melodies, rhythms and musical forms travelled back and forth across the Mediterranean, taking on new meanings on both shores. It is here, in Granada, that four musicians come together for three special evenings of music.

Marmoucha Orchestra’s oud player Mohamed Ahaddaf and percussionist Emad Ghajjou travel from the Netherlands to Granada to perform with Moroccan-Spanish singer Habiba Ouakhchachi Chaoufi and Moroccan qanun player Youssef Mezghildi. Born in Casablanca, Habiba now lives in Granada, where she has also immersed herself in flamenco and the musical traditions of Andalusia.

The programme draws on music from different regions and traditions of Morocco, including Malhoun, Gharnati, Sufi and Arabo-Andalusian music. The musicians stay close to the melodies and character of the music, while Marmoucha Orchestra’s approach can be clearly heard in the arrangements, improvisations and interplay: each musician brings their own background and musical signature. Oud, qanun and percussion come together with Habiba’s beautiful voice in a lively interplay that carries the musical history of Morocco and Andalusia into the present.

The concerts take place at three distinctive venues in the heart of Granada: Sostiene Pereira on 22 October, Hall Gar Anat at Hotel Gar-Anat on 23 October and Taberno del Beso on 24 October.
