Een eerbetoon aan Sayed Darwish

Dit jaar herdenken we het honderdjarig overlijden van de Egyptische componist Sayed Darwish (1892-1923). Als een van de pioniers van de populaire Egyptische muziek heeft Darwish een onschatbare bijdrage geleverd aan de ontwikkeling van een toegankelijkere muziekindustrie in Egypte. Zijn unieke mix van traditionele Egyptische klanken en westerse invloeden heeft een nieuwe stijl gecreëerd die tot op de dag van vandaag geliefd is in het Midden-Oosten en daarbuiten.

Ter ere van het werk van Darwish hebben RAFF, het Rotterdamse DoelenEnsemble, het Marmoucha Orchestra en de componist des vaderlands Martin Fondsesamengewerkt om een speciaal liveconcert te presenteren. Het Marmoucha Orchestra bestaat uit getalenteerde muzikanten die een passie delen voor diversiteit in muziek, met invloeden uit Noord-Afrika, het Midden-Oosten en de Middellandse Zee.

Het DoelenEnsemble is een vooraanstaand ensemble in de hedendaagse klassieke muziek.

Voor dit bijzondere project voeren het Marmoucha Orchestra en het DoelenEnsemble een bestaand muziekstuk van Sayed Darwish uit, evenals enkele muziekstukken uit hun eigen repertoire en een speciaal gecomponeerd stuk door Martin Fondse. Fondse laat zich inspireren door het werk van Darwish en geeft er zijn eigen interpretatie aan vanuit zijn rijke muzikale praktijk. Als Componist des Vaderlands voor het jaar 2021 richt Fondse zich specifiek op muziek van migranten in Nederland, waarbij hij een bijzondere interesse heeft in muziek uit het land van herkomst.

De muziekstukken worden op filmische wijze vertolkt met behulp van archiefmateriaal uit de Arabische wereld. Dit creëert een levendig beeld van het dagelijks leven waarin de muziek van Darwish een grote impact had.

In het tweede deel van het concert nemen we het publiek mee op een reis door het Arabische muzieklandschap. Zakaria Ghafouli, bekend om zijn unieke zangstijl waarin traditionele muziek harmonieus samensmelt met moderne pop-elementen, zal schitteren tijdens deze bijzondere avond.

A tribute to Sayed Darwish

This year marks the centenary of the passing of the Egyptian composer Sayed Darwish (1892-1923). As one of the pioneers of popular Egyptian music, Darwish made an invaluable contribution to the development of a more accessible music industry in Egypt. His unique blend of traditional Egyptian sounds and Western influences created a new style that remains beloved in the Middle East and beyond to this day.

In honor of Darwish’s work, RAFF, the Rotterdam DoelenEnsemble, the Marmoucha Orchestra, and the National Composer Martin Fondse have collaborated to present a special live concert. The Marmoucha Orchestra is composed of talented musicians who share a passion for musical diversity, drawing influences from North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The DoelenEnsemble is a leading ensemble in contemporary classical music.
For this special project, the Marmoucha Orchestra and the DoelenEnsemble will perform an existing musical piece by Sayed Darwish, along with some pieces from their own repertoire and a specially composed piece by Martin Fondse. Fondse draws inspiration from Darwish’s work, offering his own interpretation from his rich musical practice. As the National Composer for the year 2021, Fondse specifically focuses on music from migrants in the Netherlands, showing particular interest in music from their countries of origin.

The musical pieces will be cinematically presented using archival material from the Arab world. This creates a vivid picture of daily life in which Darwish’s music had a profound impact.

In the second part of the concert, we take the audience on a journey through the Arab musical landscape. Omar Nouilati, known for his diverse vocal styles, represents the mixed styles from the Middle East to North Africa, including Raï music from Cheb Khaled. He will shine during this special evening.
