Na veelbelovende eerste reacties in de pers presenteert Avishai Darash op 7 mei in het Bimhuis zijn nieuwste album ‘Andalusian Love Song’. Vanaf 15 januari is het album te beluisteren via alle streamingsdiensten.

Toen Avishai in 2014 voor het eerst in Marokko was en via collega-muzikant Mohamed Ahaddaf in contact kwam met Andalusische muziek, was hij direct verkocht. “Voor mij is Andalusische muziek de oorsprong en kern van westerse muziek. Ik wil mensen de Andalusische muziek leren kennen en ze hun eigen stem laten vinden. Dat is mijn missie,” zegt Avishai.

In de zomer van 2021 begon Avishai met de composities en in de herfst is alles opgenomen in de Amsterdamse Power Sound Studio. Pianovirtuoos Avishai wordt op het album begeleid door de meest gevraagde cross-over musici van Nederland.

 “Dit is mijn beste werk. Ik voel me nu een echte componist, arrangeur én projectleider. Het was mijn droom om deze bijzondere combinatie van muzikanten samen te brengen en te genieten van totale artistieke vrijheid. Het is het eerste album waarop ik echt mijn eigen stem kwijt kon.”

Ontwikkeling van de Andalusische muziek

‘Andalusian Love Song’ is een samenwerking met het Marmoucha Orchestra, dat bestaat uit bevlogen musici met een passie voor de diverse muzikale talen, stijlen en tradities van Noord-Afrika, het Midden- Oosten en het Middellandse Zeegebied. Avishai: “Het is een liefdesbrief aan de muziek van Andalusië en een eerbetoon aan de ontwikkeling van deze muziek. Daar heb ik mijn musici ook op uitgekozen: Mohamed Ahaddaf is een meester in Andalusische muziek, en Shayan Fathi in flamenco-drums. Samen vormen ze een frisse combinatie, die bizar lijkt, maar werkt!”

Muzikale reis van Andalusië en de Maghreb naar Latijns-Amerika

Voor het titelnummer gebruikte Avishai traditionele ritmes uit Andalusië: “De combinatie van westerse harmonieën en instrumenten als de blokfluit, trombone, piano en elektrische basgitaar creëert een nieuwe sound. Salsa-elementen nemen je op reis van de Maghreb naar Latijns-Amerika, waar Noord-Afrikaanse slavenhandel plaatsvond. Die slavenhandel in de zestiende eeuw heeft de culturele achtergrond van Latijns-Amerika verrijkt, waardoor een nieuwe sound kon ontstaan die we vandaag de dag kennen als salsa, samba en choro.”

“For me, Andalusian music is the origin and core of Western music. I want people to learn and discover Andalusian music and let them find their own voice in this vast and rich tradition,” says Avishai Darash, Artistic Director of the Amsterdam-based Marmoucha Orchestra and the creative visionary behind ‘Andalusian Love Song’.

Reflecting the rich cultural diversity of the Netherlands, Marmoucha is a cultural organisation that is made up of artists from North Africa, the Middle-East, the Maghreb and the Mediterranean and the Netherlands. Andalusian Love Song is a love letter to Andalusian music and its journey and evolution through the MENA region and into southern Spain. It fuses traditional sounds and rhythms with Jazz and represents a fresh outlook on tradition and innovation created by musicians with a passion for the diversity of musical languages and styles.
