Marmoucha Orchestra en Mehdi Nassouli presenteren “Sonic Bridges” op Jazzahead 2024: Een nieuw tijdperk in Jazz en Gnawa-verkenning
Het Marmoucha Orchestra, bestaande uit bevlogen musici met een diepe passie voor de rijke diversiteit aan muzikale talen, stijlen en tradities uit de SWANA[1]-regio (SouthWest Asia – North Africa) en het Middellandse Zeegebied, weet met succes een veelzijdige groep van muzikanten, artiesten en publiek samen te brengen. Dit orkest slaagt erin om Oosterse, Noord-Afrikaanse en Westerse muziek naadloos tot een nieuw geluid te laten samensmelten. Tijdens Jazzahead 2024 zal het Marmoucha Orchestra in samenwerking met Gnawa-muzikant Mehdi Nassouli hun nieuwste project, “Sonic Bridges”, presenteren. Deze samenwerking vormt een belangrijke mijlpaal in de fusie van Jazz en Gnawa-muziek, wat resulteert in een klank die zowel vernieuwend als diepgeworteld in de traditie is.
“Sonic Bridges” vertegenwoordigt een artistieke synergie tussen het Marmoucha Orchestra en de Gnawa-muzikant Mehdi Nasouli. In hun gezamenlijke reis hebben zij zich ingezet voor diverse projecten, waaronder Modes of Maqamat (2020), de Quarantine Sessies (2021), het innovatieve online Simurgh-project (2021), het grensverleggende album Sahara Koyo (2022) en het prestigieuze Urban Voices-project in Nantes (2023).
De vruchtbare interactie en diepgaande uitwisseling van kennis en inzichten tussen Mehdi Nassouli en de talentvolle arrangeurs en componisten van het Marmoucha Orchestra heeft geleid tot een vernieuwende klank. Nu begint een nieuwe fase, die een kenmerkend geluid voortbrengt, voortvloeiend uit deze unieke samenwerking. Het Marmoucha Orchestra, toegewijd aan artistieke groei en verfijning, heeft een krachtig, coherent geluid ontwikkeld. In dit project spelen de virtuoze muzikanten van het orkest, met hun grondige kennis van stijl en arrangementen, een sleutelrol naast Mehdi Nassouli.

In an exciting musical venture, Marmoucha Orchestra and the celebrated Gnawa musician Mehdi Nassouli are set to showcase their latest project, “Sonic Bridges” at Jazzahead 2024. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the fusion of Jazz and Gnawa music, creating a sound that is both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition.
“Sonic Bridges” is a musical partnership between the Marmoucha Orchestra in the Netherlands and Gnawa star Mehdi Nassouli. They’ve worked together on various projects, from the Quarantine Sessions to the Simurgh project, and now the groundbreaking Sahara Koyo. This collaboration has created a new and unique sound crafted by Mehdi Nassouli, the composers and arrangers of the Marmoucha Orchestra, and skilled musicians. During this collaboration, there has been a meaningful exchange of knowledge and understanding between both sides. Now, they’re moving into the next phase—a distinctive sound born from this unique partnership. The Marmoucha Orchestra’s dedication over the past few years has led to a strong and cohesive sound, showcasing their commitment to continuous refinement and artistic development.
In this project, virtuoso players from the Marmoucha Orchestra accompany Mehdi Nasouli, each playing a crucial role. These musicians, who have worked together on various concerts and projects, have developed a deep understanding of the style and arrangements.
