In het Bimhuis presenteerde de Iraanse bassist Arin Keshishi zijn debuutalbum ‘Self-Reflection’. Het album verscheen afgelopen najaar en werd nu live gespeeld met leden van het Marmoucha Orchestra. Het concert was sfeervol en temperamentvol en leunde op uiteenlopende muziektradities.

Stichting Marmoucha produceert muzieken muziektheatervoorstellingen waarin Andalusië, de Maghreb en het MiddenOosten centraal staan. Musici, theatermakers, dansers, acteurs, componisten geven inhoud aan de producties die tot leven worden gebracht door het orkest. Vanuit de eigen muzikale tradities wordt een brug geslagen naar jazz, pop en elektronische muziek. Een concept met kleur en karakter.

Arin Keshishi (1992) stamt uit een Armeense familie, groeide op in Teheran en woont thans in Amsterdam. Hij is componist, producer en artistiek leider van het Marmoucha Orchestra. Bovenal heeft hij zich bewezen als veelzijdig bassist en studiomuzikant. ‘Self-Reflections’ weerspiegelt zijn muzikale identiteit. Het orkest speelt een belangrijke rol in zijn ontwikkeling en geeft hem de ruimte om te experimenteren met een breed ensemble. Op deze avond hanteerde hij het orkest feitelijk als een medium bigband met een bevlogen missie.

Er klonken goede arrangementen op basis van swing en ‘grooves’, waarin jazz, funk en pop duidelijk de overhand hadden. Daartegenover stonden stukken waarin niet Westerse muziekculturen en klassieke invloeden domineerden. Echt interessant werd de muziek wanneer deze een hybride ritmiek had. Dan werd je verrast door een gelaagde sound.

Het ensemble heeft een ritme- en blazerssectie van elk vier spelers, waartussen de accenten steeds verschoven. De groep opereerde als een troep jonge honden met een sterke focus. Opvallend was de bijdrage van zangeres Delaram Kafashzadeh. Zij zong voornamelijk op klank en voegde gedragen en lyrische lijnen toe. Arin Keshishi maakt mooi werk dat op een aanstekelijke manier werd uitgevoerd. De titels van zijn stukken weerspiegelen zijn maatschappelijke betrokkenheid. De bijbehorende muziek is filmisch van sfeer en heeft een contrastrijk palet. ‘Desperate’ is zo’n titel. In dit stuk werd via een betoverende menging van klassiek impressionisme en Arabische invloeden toegewerkt naar een verrassende vocale interventie van trombonist Pablo Martinez. Gepassioneerd zong hij opzwepende flamenco frasen. Het concert werd afgesloten met een stevige uitsmijter waarin de groep mooi gedoceerd losging. Achter het Marmoucha Orchestra gaat een veelbelovend concept schuil, dat ongetwijfeld zal opvallen als slotconcert van de showcases tijdens het komende netwerk- en beursevenement Jazzahead! in Bremen (11 – 13 april 2024).

At the Bimhuis, Iranian bassist Arin Keshishi presented his debut album ‘Self-Reflection.’ The album, released last fall, was performed live with members of the Marmoucha Orchestra. The concert was atmospheric and passionate, drawing on diverse musical traditions.

Marmoucha Foundation produces music and music theater performances centered on Andalusia, the Maghreb, and the Middle East. Musicians, theater makers, dancers, actors, and composers bring the productions to life with the orchestra. They build bridges between their musical traditions and jazz, pop, and electronic music—a concept full of color and character.

Arin Keshishi (1992) comes from an Armenian family, grew up in Tehran, and now lives in Amsterdam. He is a composer, producer, and artistic director of the Marmoucha Orchestra. Above all, he has proven himself as a versatile bassist and studio musician. ‘Self-Reflections’ reflects his musical identity. The orchestra plays a significant role in his development, allowing him to experiment with a broad ensemble. On this evening, he used the orchestra as a kind of medium-sized big band with a passionate mission.

There were well-crafted arrangements based on swing and grooves, with jazz, funk, and pop clearly taking the lead. In contrast, other pieces were dominated by non-Western musical cultures and classical influences. The music became particularly interesting when it had a hybrid rhythmic structure, surprising the audience with its layered sound.

The ensemble featured rhythm and horn sections, each with four players, constantly shifting accents. The group performed with youthful energy and a strong focus. A standout contribution came from vocalist Delaram Kafashzadeh, who sang primarily with tonal expressions, adding lyrical and sustained lines. Arin Keshishi created compelling work that was executed in an infectious manner. The titles of his pieces reflect his social engagement, and the accompanying music has a cinematic atmosphere with a contrasting palette. ‘Desperate’ is one such title. This piece evolved through a mesmerizing blend of classical impressionism and Arabic influences, leading to a surprising vocal intervention by trombonist Pablo Martinez, who passionately sang rousing flamenco phrases. The concert ended with a powerful encore in which the group energetically played out in a well-measured way. The Marmoucha Orchestra presents a promising concept that is sure to stand out as the closing concert of the showcases at the upcoming networking and trade event Jazzahead! in Bremen (April 11-13, 2024).
