Carried by the Wind
Een saxofoon die zingt als een flamencozanger. Een grenzeloze Iraans-Armeense bassist die flamenco en het Oosten met elkaar verbindt. Een danser die zijn leven riskeerde om te kunnen bewegen. Een orkest dat de grens tussen Oost en West niet erkent. Carried by the Wind brengt hen samen op één podium.
Antonio Lizana – geboren in San Fernando, Cádiz, de wieg van de flamencozang – is een zeldzaamheid: een virtuoze jazzsaxofonist die tegelijk authentiek flamenco zingt. Met meer dan driehonderd concerten in dertig landen, een NPR Tiny Desk Concert en Grammy-bekroonde samenwerkingen met Arturo O’Farrill en Alejandro Sanz behoort hij tot de meest opwindende stemmen in de hedendaagse flamenco-jazz. Toen hij als kind in Cádiz voor het eerst de muziek van de Turkse componist Omar Faruk Tekbilek hoorde, ontstond een verlangen naar het Oosten dat nooit meer verdween.
Die fascinatie bracht hem bij Arin Keshishi – Iraans-Armeense bassist, componist en artistiek leider van het Marmoucha Orchestra. Als bassist in Lizana’s kwintet kent Keshishi zijn muzikale taal van binnenuit. In Carried by the Wind draaien de rollen om: Keshishi plaatst Lizana’s flamenco en saxofoon in het hart van het Marmoucha Orchestra, waar ze worden verweven met strijkers, oud, percussie en melodieën uit de SWANA-regio. Een onverwachte instrumentatie die flamenco een geheel nieuwe klankwereld geeft.
En dan is er Ahmad Joudeh. Staatloos geboren in een vluchtelingenkamp in Damascus, leerde hij zichzelf ballet terwijl de bommen vielen. Hij danste in het Romeinse theater van Palmyra toen het gebied onder controle stond van IS. Zijn documentaire Dance or Die won een International Emmy. Het Nationale Ballet haalde hem naar Amsterdam; hij danste op het Eurovisie Songfestival en is UNHCR-ambassadeur en Young Global Leader van het World Economic Forum. In Carried by the Wind brengt hij de mystieke Sama-dans uit de soefi-traditie naar het podium — een draaiende meditatie waarin ballingschap, veerkracht en overgave zichtbaar worden in elke beweging.
Samen creëren Lizana, Keshishi, Joudeh en het Marmoucha Orchestra een voorstelling waarin flamenco, oosterse klanken en Sama-dans geen genres meer zijn, maar één gedeelde taal. Carried by the Wind is muziek en beweging als mystieke ervaring — intens, grensoverschrijdend en onvergetelijk.
Carried by the Wind is een productie van Marmoucha en is mede mogelijk gemaakt door het AFK (Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst) en het Fonds Podiumkunsten. De première vond plaats in het BIMHUIS als onderdeel van de Flamenco Biënnale Nederland 2025.

A saxophone that sings like a flamenco vocalist. A boundary-crossing Iranian-Armenian bassist who bridges flamenco and the East. A dancer who risked his life in order to move. An orchestra that refuses to recognize the line between East and West. Carried by the Wind brings them together on one stage.
Antonio Lizana — born in San Fernando, Cádiz, the cradle of flamenco singing — is a rarity: a virtuoso jazz saxophonist who also sings authentic flamenco. With more than three hundred concerts in thirty countries, an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, and Grammy-winning collaborations with Arturo O’Farrill and Alejandro Sanz, he is one of the most exciting voices in contemporary flamenco jazz. As a child in Cádiz, hearing the music of Turkish composer Omar Faruk Tekbilek for the first time sparked a fascination with the East that never left him.
That fascination led him to Arin Keshishi — an Iranian-Armenian bassist, composer, and artistic director of the Marmoucha Orchestra. As the bassist in Lizana’s quintet, Keshishi knows his musical language from the inside out. In Carried by the Wind, their roles are reversed: Keshishi places Lizana’s flamenco and saxophone at the heart of the Marmoucha Orchestra, where they are interwoven with strings, oud, percussion, and melodies from the SWANA region. An unexpected instrumentation that gives flamenco an entirely new sonic landscape.
And then there is Ahmad Joudeh. Born stateless in a refugee camp in Damascus, he taught himself ballet while bombs were falling. He danced in the Roman theatre of Palmyra when the area was under ISIS control. His documentary Dance or Die won an International Emmy. The Dutch National Ballet brought him to Amsterdam; he performed at the Eurovision Song Contest and is a UNHCR ambassador and a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum. In Carried by the Wind, he brings the mystical Sama dance from the Sufi tradition to the stage — a whirling meditation in which exile, resilience, and surrender become visible in every movement.
Together, Lizana, Keshishi, Joudeh, and the Marmoucha Orchestra create a performance in which flamenco, Eastern sounds, and Sama dance are no longer separate genres, but a shared language. Carried by the Wind is music and movement as a mystical experience — intense, border-crossing, and unforgettable.
