Dancing Strings Festival 2023, Den Haag

‘Dancing strings’ staat voor alle verschillende snaarinstrumenten wereldwijd, waarbij het eeuwenoude tokkelinstrument de ‘ud centraal staat – als solo-instrument maar ook als integraal onderdeel van diverse bezettingen met snaarinstrumenten uit verschillende culturen. In de derde editie van het festival staan, naast de ‘ud, verwante instrumenten als sentir, mandole en laouto centraal.

Het programma van het festival bestaat elke avond uit vijf delen. Er is een bijzondere setting met nieuwe composities van drie Nederlandse componisten van deels Marokkaanse oorsprong die werk maken voor snaarinstrumenten als ‘ud, mandole en laouto: Kamal Hors, Michiel Hollanders en Mohamed Ahaddaf. Per componist worden drie nieuwe werken uitgevoerd, naast drie werken van Aziz Sahmaoui in een speciaal arrangement. Uitvoerenden zijn de componisten samen met het Marmoucha Orkest.

In het tweede deel van het programma treedt de moderne gnawamuzikant Aziz Sahmaoui, bekend van University of Gnawa en Orchestre National de Barbès, op met zijn trio op sentir, mandole, cello en percussie. Als grandioos slot spelen alle deelnemende musici samen een werk van Sahmaoui.

Dancing Strings Festival 2023 is een Coproductie van Marmoucha Orchestra en Dancing Stings Festival

‘Dancing Strings’ represents all the different string instruments worldwide, with the ancient plucked instrument, the ‘ud, taking center stage – both as a solo instrument and as an integral part of various ensembles featuring string instruments from different cultures. In the festival’s third edition, alongside the ‘ud, related instruments such as the sentir, mandole, and laouto are highlighted.

The festival’s program consists of five parts each evening. There is a unique setting featuring new compositions by three Dutch composers of partly Moroccan origin, creating works for string instruments like the ‘ud, mandole, and laouto: Kamal Hors, Michiel Hollanders, and Mohamed Ahaddaf. Each composer presents three new pieces, in addition to three works by Aziz Sahmaoui in a special arrangement. The performers include the composers themselves along with the Marmoucha Orchestra.

In the second part of the program, modern gnawa musician Aziz Sahmaoui, known from University of Gnawa and Orchestre National de Barbès, performs with his trio on sentir, mandole, cello, and percussion. As a grand finale, all participating musicians come together to perform a piece by Sahmaoui.
