Dancing Strings Festival 2023, Utrecht

Stap binnen in de wereld van ‘Dancing Strings’. Dancing Strings Festival brengt samen met Marmoucha de meest betoverende snaarinstrumenten ter wereld samen, met de focus op de eeuwenoude en meesterlijke ’ud. Het festival neemt het publiek mee op een muzikale reis waarbij de ‘ud schittert als solo-instrument maar ook als integraal onderdeel van diverse bezettingen met snaarinstrumenten uit verschillende culturen. Het programma van het festival bestaat elke avond uit vijf delen. De componisten spelen hun eigen werk en worden begeleid door het Marmoucha Orchestra. Deze werken zijn gearrangeerd door Ardashes Aghosian.

’Ud-speler Kamal Hors maakt lichte kamermuziek: muziek zonder grenzen waarin melodieën leiden tot het ontstaan van een muzikale ziel die gevoelens aanspreekt. Met de nieuwe composities combineert hij diverse toonladders met springerige onregel matige ritmes met ruimte voor improvisatie.

Michiel Hollanders brengt drie nieuwe composities, die zijn fascinatie weerspiegelen voor instrumenten en muziek uit Griekenland. Met name de penta tonische toonladder en de 7/8 ritmes uit de traditionele muziek uit Epirus, waar hij woont, zijn leidend. Hollanders speelt laouto en gitarron.

De getalenteerde Mohamed Ahaddaf heeft zijn energie gestoken in het ontwikkelen van de techniek van de ’ud. Zijn nieuwe creatie ‘Ana W’inta’ dat ‘Jij en ik’ betekent, is een veelbelovend project met een indrukwekkend palet aan klanken.

In het tweede deel van het programma staat de moderne gnawa-muzikant Aziz Sahmaoui centraal. Hij maakte furore met Orchestre National de Barbès en University of Gnawa. Sahmaoui brengt werk van zijn nieuwe album met de traditionele instrumenten ngoni (sentir), mandole, gitaar, basgitaar en percussie. Samen zorgen zij voor een groovy sound vol emoties en variaties. De tweede set, samen met het Marmoucha Orchestra, neemt het publiek mee in een smeltkroes van Noord-Afrikaanse muziekstijlen met westerse harmonie, waarin zang en improvisatie de boventoon voeren.

Als grandioos slot spelen alle deelnemende musici samen een spannend werk van Sahmaoui.

Step into the world of ‘Dancing Strings.’ The Dancing Strings Festival, in collaboration with Marmoucha, brings together the most enchanting string instruments in the world, with a focus on the ancient and masterful ‘ud. The festival takes the audience on a musical journey where the ‘ud shines as a solo instrument but also as an integral part of various ensembles featuring string instruments from different cultures. The festival’s program consists of five parts every evening. The composers perform their own work accompanied by the Marmoucha Orchestra. These works are arranged by Ardashes Aghosian.

‘Ud player Kamal Hors creates light chamber music: music without boundaries in which melodies give rise to a musical soul that touches the emotions. With the new compositions, he combines various scales with lively, irregular rhythms, leaving room for improvisation.

Michiel Hollanders presents three new compositions that reflect his fascination for instruments and music from Greece. In particular, the pentatonic scale and the 7/8 rhythms from the traditional music of Epirus, where he resides, take the lead. Hollanders plays the laouto and gitarron.

The talented Mohamed Ahaddaf has dedicated his energy to developing ‘ud technique. His new creation, ‘Ana W’inta,’ meaning ‘You and I,’ is a promising project with an impressive palette of sounds.

The second part of the program focuses on the modern gnawa musician Aziz Sahmaoui. He gained fame with Orchestre National de Barbès and University of Gnawa. Sahmaoui presents work from his new album with traditional instruments like ngoni (sentir), mandole, guitar, bass guitar, and percussion. Together, they create a groovy sound full of emotions and variations. The second set, in collaboration with the Marmoucha Orchestra, immerses the audience in a melting pot of North African musical styles with Western harmonies, featuring vocals and improvisation.

As a grand finale, all participating musicians come together to perform an exciting piece by Sahmaoui.
