The Super Gnawa Girls
Marmoucha Orchestra و The Super Gnawa Girls
Gnawa is music you feel. Deep, pulsating sounds, vocals and repetition gradually build into a groove that grows ever more intense. Rooted in centuries-old spiritual traditions, the music is closely connected to community, ritual and trance. In Morocco, Gnawa remains very much alive, on the streets and on stage, at festivals and during the lila, the traditional all-night ceremonies where music and spirituality come together.
The Super Gnawa Girls
Within this tradition, Halima Boulkhair El Gourd, Ijjo Beljaoui and Fatima Ezzahra Jebli occupy a unique position. The public world of Gnawa has traditionally been dominated by men. In particular, the role of the mâalem, the master musician who sings and plays the guembri, is strongly associated with men. These three women are part of a new generation of musicians increasingly claiming their place within this world, each drawing on her own background to contribute to the continuing development of Gnawa.
Marmoucha Orchestra
This connects directly with the way Marmoucha Orchestra works. The orchestra brings together musicians from different cultural and musical backgrounds, each contributing their own traditions, influences and musical language. Under the artistic direction of Arin Keshishi, these different musical roots are blended with contemporary influences including jazz, improvisation, pop, rock and electronic music. The result is new music that is constantly evolving.
Gnawa is familiar territory for Marmoucha Orchestra. For several years, the orchestra has collaborated with internationally renowned Moroccan Gnawa master Mehdi Nassouli, including on the successful production Sonic Bridges. With the SuperGnawa Girls, a new perspective enters the mix, brought by three female musicians from different parts of Morocco.
Digital Lila 2025
Halima Boulkhair El Gourd from Tangier, Ijjo Beljaoui from Agadir and Fatima Ezzahra Jebli from Essaouira came together through Digital Lila 2025, a talent development programme by the Holland Gnawa Festival in collaboration with Gnaoua Culture. In this new production, their different regional Gnawa traditions, vocals and guembri playing meet the rich, contemporary sound of Marmoucha Orchestra. Deep grooves and hypnotic rhythms, powerful voices, improvisation and the energy of an orchestra unafraid to explore new musical directions all come together on stage.
Marmoucha Orchestra و SuperGnawa Girls premieres at the Holland Gnawa Festival and is made possible in part by AFK (Amsterdam Fund for the Arts) and FPK (Performing Arts Fund NL).
