Marmoucha Orchestra EssentialsA Holland MENA Film Festival Special

Marmoucha Orchestra Essentials
A Holland MENA Film Festival Special
Especially for the Holland MENA Film Festival, Marmoucha Orchestra brings together compositions and arrangements from different productions in a single concert programme for the first time. To do so, the orchestra draws on its own musical archive, featuring works written and arranged over the years by the musicians of Marmoucha Orchestra themselves, as well as pieces created in collaboration with guest musicians from different musical traditions.
Throughout the evening, compositions from different periods in Marmoucha Orchestra’s history follow one another like scenes in a film. Arabic classical music and maqam traditions from countries including Egypt, Syria and Lebanon are heard alongside Moroccan Andalusian music and North African and Mediterranean influences, providing the musical backdrop. Like a film montage, compositions originally created for different productions are brought together in a single programme. Oud player Mohamed Ahaddaf, who has long been an important musical voice within the orchestra, adds new compositions to this montage. Guest artist Samia Sabri brings her own musical personality and vocal style to the different pieces, her voice providing the thread that connects the scenes into a single story.
Whether you are hearing Marmoucha Orchestra for the first time or have followed the ensemble for years, this programme brings the orchestra’s distinctive signature to the fore. Under the artistic direction of Arin Keshishi, musicians from different cultural and musical backgrounds contribute their own knowledge, experience and creative ideas. Traditional music and compositions are reinterpreted through influences including jazz, classical music and improvisation, while always respecting their origins. Marmoucha Orchestra approaches musical tradition not as something fixed, but as a living organism to which each generation of musicians can contribute. In this way, the orchestra looks both back and ahead: the recognisable style, quality and synergy that come together in this programme also offer a promise of what Marmoucha Orchestra will bring in the future.
