Begin 2026 verscheen Wahj – het tweede album van de in Beiroet geboren en in Amsterdam gevestigde muziekproducer, sound designer, componist, zanger en filmmaker Toni Geitani.

The Guardian riep het uit tot Global Album of the Month en noemde het een meesterlijk geproduceerd werk dat donkere spanning omzet in cinematische schoonheid. Bandcamp Daily beschreef het als een 75 minuten durend epos van vocalen, percussie en synthesizers dat klinkt alsof het voor het grote scherm is gemaakt. Nu brengt Toni Wahj naar OT301 voor een avond met live electronics, visuals en licht.

Wahj (وهج, ‘gloed’) onderzoekt wat overeind blijft na de ineenstorting – niet als nederlaag, maar als verzet, mogelijkheid en hoop. Het album beweegt tussen experimentele Arabische muziek, dark ambient, industriële elektronica en avant-pop, zonder zich door één genre te laten definiëren. Toni verweeft maqam-melodieën en layālī-vocalisaties met bewerkte instrumenten, analoge synthesizers en niet-lineaire ritmes tot een eigen klanktaal: geworteld in de echo’s van een door oorlog getekend Beiroet, maar gericht op wat voorbij de catastrofe blijft gloeien.

Als filmmaker maakte Toni The Disappearance of Goya (2018), ondersteund door de Ashkal Alwan Video Works-beurs, vertoond op internationale filmfestivals en bekroond met de prijs voor Beste Internationale korte of middellange film op RIDM. Zijn Master of Music in Live Electronics aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam mondde uit in de scriptie Sampling as a Political Medium (2023), een onderzoek naar de politieke lading van sampling binnen elektronische muziek.

Als interdisciplinair maker en projectleider werkte hij eerder samen met het Marmoucha Orchestra aan Old Signs New Sounds (2024) en The Phonograph Changed Me (2025).

Dit project maakt deel uit van de Identities-serie van Marmoucha en wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst (AFK) en het Fonds Podiumkunsten (FPK). De artistieke kracht en internationale ontvangst van Wahj vormen voor Marmoucha het vertrekpunt voor een nieuwe productie van het Marmoucha Orchestra.

Marmoucha presents: Toni Geitani – Wahj live

In early 2026, Wahj was released – the second album by Beirut-born, Amsterdam-based music producer, sound designer, composer, singer and filmmaker Toni Geitani.

The Guardian named it Global Album of the Month, calling it a masterfully produced work that transforms dark tension into cinematic beauty. Bandcamp Daily described it as a 75-minute epic of vocals, percussion and synthesizers that sounds as if it were made for the big screen. Now Toni brings Wahj to OT301 for an evening of live electronics, visuals and light.

Wahj (وهج, ‘radiance’) explores what remains standing after collapse — not as defeat, but as resistance, possibility and hope. The album moves through experimental Arabic music, dark ambient, industrial electronics and avant-pop without allowing itself to be defined by any single genre. Toni weaves maqam melodies and layālī vocalisations together with processed instruments, analogue synthesizers and non-linear rhythms into a sonic language of his own: rooted in the echoes of a Beirut marked by war, yet directed toward what continues to glow beyond catastrophe.

As a filmmaker, Toni made The Disappearance of Goya (2018), supported by the Ashkal Alwan Video Works grant, screened at international film festivals and awarded Best International Short or Medium-Length Film at RIDM. His Master of Music in Live Electronics at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam resulted in the thesis Sampling as a Political Medium (2023), an exploration of the political charge of sampling within electronic music.

As an interdisciplinary artist and project leader, he previously collaborated with the Marmoucha Orchestra on Old Signs New Sounds (2024) and The Phonograph Changed Me (2025).
