Marmoucha Orchestra’s Ode to the Icons

Sommige liedjes hoef je maar een paar seconden te horen. Je kent de melodie, je kent het refrein en voor je het weet neurie je mee. Kan Ya Makan, Ma Ana Illa Bachar, Hadek El Insan en al die andere klassiekers uit de gouden jaren van de Marokkaanse muziek zijn voor generaties Marokkanen deel geworden van hun leven.

Het zijn de liederen van grote stemmen als Abdelwahab Doukkali, Mohamed El Hayani, Naima Samih, Mimount n’Serwan, Mahmoud El Idrissi, Abdelhadi Belkhayat, Rajae Belmlih, Fathallah Lamghari en Hamid Zahir. Muziek die in Marokko uit radio’s en cafés klonk en een vaste plek heeft op feesten en belangrijke muziekevenementen. Muziek die met Marokkanen mee naar Nederland kwam en hier weer werd doorgegeven aan hun kinderen. Daardoor kennen ook veel jongeren deze melodieën, soms zonder precies te weten van wie het origineel eigenlijk was.

Met Ode to the Icons brengt Marmoucha Orchestra deze iconische muziek naar het concertpodium en geeft het deze klassiekers de hoogwaardige live-uitvoering die ze verdienen. Het orkest bestaat uit internationale topmusici met uiteenlopende muzikale achtergronden en veel ervaring met muziek uit Noord-Afrika, Zuidwest-Azië en het Middellandse Zeegebied. Voor deze voorstelling blijven zij dicht bij de oorspronkelijke melodieën, arrangementen en sfeer van de liederen. De kracht zit in de uitvoering: een rijk orkestgeluid, sterke solisten en musici die volledig thuis zijn in deze muzikale traditie.

Voor de zang nodigt Marmoucha Orchestra Samia Sabri en Issam Serhan uit. Samia heeft een sterke achtergrond in het klassieke Marokkaanse repertoire en beschikt over een warme, krachtige stem die uitstekend past bij deze muziek. Issam beweegt zich als zanger tussen Arabische klassieke en Andalusische muziek, chaabi en populaire Marokkaanse muziek. Hij werkte eerder met Marmoucha Orchestra aan het Simurgh Project. Samen vertolken zij de liederen van de grote zangers en zangeressen die dit repertoire beroemd maakten, ieder met hun eigen stem en stijl.

Videokunstenaar Tony Geitani ontwikkelt voor de voorstelling nieuw beeld dat de muziek en de tijd waarin deze ontstond op het podium visualiseert. Muziek en beeld brengen zo verschillende generaties samen rond een repertoire dat na tientallen jaren nog altijd springlevend is.

Ode to the Icons is een avond voor iedereen die met deze muziek is opgegroeid, via ouders of grootouders met de liederen kennismaakte, of de grote Marokkaanse stemmen voor het eerst live wil ontdekken. En wie de woorden nog kent: zing vooral mee!

Marmoucha Orchestra’s Ode to the Icons

Some songs only need a few seconds. You know the melody, you know the chorus, and before you realise it, you’re humming along. Kan Ya Makan, Ma Ana Illa Bachar, Hadek El Insan and all those other classics from the golden age of Moroccan music have been part of the lives of generations of Moroccans.

These are songs made famous by great voices such as Abdelwahab Doukkali, Mohamed El Hayani, Naima Samih, Mimount n’Serwan, Mahmoud El Idrissi, Abdelhadi Belkhayat, Rajae Belmlih, Fathallah Lamghari and Hamid Zahir. Music that could be heard on radios and in cafés throughout Morocco and became a fixture at celebrations and major music events. Music that travelled with Moroccans to the Netherlands and was passed on to their children. As a result, many younger people know these melodies too, sometimes without even knowing who originally performed them.

With Ode to the Icons, Marmoucha Orchestra brings this iconic music to the concert stage, giving these classics the high-quality live performance they deserve. The orchestra consists of outstanding international musicians from a wide range of musical backgrounds, with extensive experience in music from North Africa, Southwest Asia and the Mediterranean. For this performance, they stay close to the original melodies, arrangements and atmosphere of the songs. Its strength lies in the performance itself: a rich orchestral sound, outstanding soloists and musicians who are completely at home in this musical tradition.

For the vocals, Marmoucha Orchestra is joined by Samia Sabri and Issam Serhan. Samia has a strong background in the classical Moroccan repertoire and a warm, powerful voice that is perfectly suited to this music. As a singer, Issam moves between classical Arabic and Andalusian music, chaabi and popular Moroccan music. He previously worked with Marmoucha Orchestra on the Simurgh Project. Together, they perform songs made famous by some of Morocco’s greatest singers, each bringing their own voice and style.

Video artist Tony Geitani creates new visuals especially for the performance, bringing the music and the era in which it emerged to life on stage. Music and visuals bring different generations together around a repertoire that remains as vibrant as ever, decades after these songs were first heard.

Ode to the Icons is an evening for everyone who grew up with this music, discovered these songs through their parents or grandparents, or wants to experience the great voices of Moroccan music live for the first time. And if you still know the words, feel free to sing along!
