Neil van der Linden is gespecialiseerd in Arabische en Midden-oosterse kunst en cultuur, met name de muziek, theater en beeldende kunst. Neil werkte als dramaturg bij het Ro Theater, het Noord Nederlands Toneel en het Holland Festival. Vanaf 1989 was hij ook secretaris van de Raad voor de Kunst in achtereenvolgens de commissies Film, Theater en Muziek. In 1994 begon hij met culturele uitwisselingsprojecten met het Midden-Oosten.
Hij begeleidde veel Nederlandse musici en theatermakers naar het Midden-Oosten en andersom introduceerde hij veel kunstenaars uit het Midden-Oosten in Nederland en omgeving.
Hij heeft muziekfestivals geprogrammeerd of muzikale programmaonderdelen bijgedragen aan onder meer het Festival de la Musique Sacrée in Fes en het Timitar festival in Agadir, in Marokko, in het Sounds of Arabia Festival, de Book Fair en de New York University in Abu Dhabi, de operahuizen van Caïro en Damascus en het Beiteddine festival in Libanon, en festivals in Iran. Hij zette ook permanente samenwerkingen op tussen Nederlandse musici als Yuri Honing, Tony Overwater en Jan Akkerman en musici uit Libanon, Syrië, Jordanië, Irak en Egypte. Hij recenseert geregeld voor het muziekblad Songlines en schreef delen over de muziek van Irak en Egypt voor de Rough Guide to Music en de Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World.
Momenteel onderzoekt hij de muzikale erfenis van sub-Sahara Oost-Afrika, deels via de geschiedenis van de slavernij, maar ook andere migratie, in de voormalige Arabische, Perzisch, Ottomaanse en Indiase wereld.
Neil van der Linden specialises in Arab and Middle Eastern arts and culture, in particular music, theatre and visual arts. Neil worked as a dramaturge at the Ro Theater, the Noord Nederlands Toneel and the Holland Festival. From 1989, he was secretary of the Dutch Council for the Arts in the Film, Theatre, and Music committees, successively. In 1994, he started cultural exchange projects with the Middle East.
Neil has guided many Dutch musicians and theatre makers into the Middle East, and equally introduced many Middle Eastern artists to the Netherlands and its environs.
He has programmed music festivals or contributed musical programme elements to, among others, the Festival de la Musique Sacrée in Fes and the Timitar festival in Agadir, both in Morocco, the Sounds of Arabia Festival, the Book Fair and the New York University in Abu Dhabi, the opera houses in Cairo and Damascus and the Beiteddine festival in Lebanon, as well as festivals in Iran. He also established permanent collaborations between Dutch musicians such as Yuri Honing, Tony Overwater and Jan Akkerman and musicians from Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt.
Neil is a regular reviewer for Songlines Magazine. He also wrote about the music of Iraq and Egypt for the Rough Guide to Music and the Bloomsbury Encyclopaedia of Popular Music of the World.
At present, Neil is researching the musical inheritance of sub-Sahara East Africa, partially through the history of slavery, as well as other migrations in(to) the Arab, Persian, Ottoman and Indian empires.
