Mohamed Ahaddaf is een getalenteerde ud-speler, een componist en musicus uit Marokko die stevig geworteld is in de Andalusische cultuur. Hij studeerde aan het conservatorium van Tetouan en had les van de grootmeester Mohamed Ramat. Hij was solist van het Andalusisch orkest van Mohamed Lardi Temsamani. Na zijn komst in Nederland besloot hij zijn kennis breder in te gaan zetten. Hij is een gerespecteerd musicus die naast zijn Andalusische wortels zich heeft ontwikkeld in de jazz en Arabische muziek.
In 2010 richtte hij het ‘Ahaddaf Quartet’ op met ud, piano, bas en percussie. Een ongebruikelijke combinatie waarbij de rol van de piano en de ud speciale aandacht verdienen. Deze instrumenten zijn ieder in hun eigen cultuur de basis van de muziekpraktijk. Wat de piano is voor de westerse muziek (iedere musicus speelt een beetje piano en de piano is in bijna iedere combinatie aanwezig) dat is de ud voor de Arabische muziek. Om deze twee instrumenten te combineren vraagt extra aandacht. Niet in de laatste plaats door de vaste getemperde stemming van de piano en de vrije, vaak met kwartnoten doorspekte, stemmingen van de ud.
Mohamed Ahaddaf heeft onlangs een zelf ontwikkelde 7 snarige ud laten bouwen met een extra hoge snaar op B. De meeste zijn 6-snarig. Het kwartet nam 3 cd’s op met composities van Mohamed Ahaddaf, Nasim al Andalous uit 2012, Spoken Soul uit 2014 en Seasons uit 2016.
Mohamed Ahaddaf is a highly talented oud player, composer and musician from Morocco, with firm roots in Andalusian culture. He studied at the Tétouan Conservatory, where he was taught by grandmaster Mohamed Ramat. He was a soloist in Mohamed Lardi Temsamani’s Andalusian Orchestra.
After arriving in the Netherlands, he decided to use his knowledge more widely. Mohamed is a well-respected musician, who alongside his Andalusian roots, has made strides into jazz and Arabic music.
In 2010, Mohamed founded the Ahaddaf Quartet, featuring the oud, piano, bass and percussion. An unusual combination, particularly because of the roles the oud and piano play. These instruments are the foundation of musical practice, each in their own culture. What the piano is to western music (every musician plays a little piano and the piano is present in almost every combination), the oud is to Arabic music. So, to combine these 2 instruments requires special attention. Not least because of the piano’s equal-tempered tuning and the oud’s free tuning – often laced with quarter notes. The quartet has recorded 3 CDs featuring Mohamed’s own compositions: Nasim al Andalous (2012), Spoken Soul (2014) and Seasons (2016).
Recently, Mohamed commissioned the build of a self-designed, 7-string oud with an additional high string on B.
